Barbara Ann Matteson, 81, of Durham, NC, passed away unexpectedly on February 16, 2026.
Barbara was born on April 23, 1944, in Buffalo, NY. She was the daughter of Frederick Charles and Matilda “Tillie” Freida Stroke. She attended and graduated from Buffalo State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She began her career as an Art Teacher at Holland Central School, sharing her talents and passion of art with countless students. She later continued her artistic journey at Fisher‑Price in the Art Deco Department in East Aurora NY, where her creativity brought joy to children and families around the world.
Barbara was a longtime resident of Holland, NY, where she raised her three children and made many close friends.
Not only was Barb a gifted artist, but she was also an exceptional cook and someone with a generous, loving heart. She poured care into everything she did. She cherished her family, her friends, and every animal that crossed her path. Her warmth, kindness, and creativity touched everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Eric (Jacqueline) of Durham, NC; Jason (Amy) of Raleigh, NC; and Tara of Marion, NY. She is also survived by her grandchildren Gabriel, Zachary, Erica, Katherine, and Morgan; and her great‑grandchildren Zachary and Blake Leigh. Her family will forever hold close the memories of her gentle spirit, her laughter, and the love she gave so freely.
A chapel service at Acacia Park Cemetery (North Tonawanda, NY) will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Purr Partners Feline Rescue or the SPCA.
Her legacy of love, faith, and creativity will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
