With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Brandon K. McLaughlin, age 28.
Though his time with us was far too short, the love he gave and the lives he touched will remain with us forever.
Born in Tampa, Florida, on October 28, 1997, Brandon spent much of his childhood alongside his sisters and single mother as her Army career took them to duty stations across the country. Through every move and every challenge, they shared a close bond, and Brandon treasured the time they spent together. During his later teenage years and into adulthood, he made Wilmington, Delaware, his home, where he formed lifelong friendships and became known for his kind heart, generous spirit, and unwavering compassion.
Over the past several days, as friends from every chapter of Brandon's life have shared their memories, one message has been repeated over and over again: Brandon had one of the kindest hearts they had ever known. He was generous beyond measure, quick to help anyone in need, and deeply compassionate. Whether someone knew him for years or only a short time, Brandon had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for.
Brandon found his greatest joy working with dogs as a trainer. Animals seemed to understand him in a way words never could, and he loved them with his whole heart. His patience, compassion, and natural connection with them brought comfort and confidence to both the dogs he worked with and the people who entrusted them to his care.
Brandon loved deeply. He cherished his family, especially the extraordinary bond he shared with his sister, Melissa. They lovingly called each other "my twin," a reflection of not only their striking resemblance but also the unbreakable connection they shared. He also carried an enduring love for his sister Amanda, whose loss forever changed his life. Brandon was a loyal friend whose kindness and compassion left people feeling valued, supported, and genuinely cared for.
After the heartbreaking loss of his sister Amanda, Brandon found strength and purpose through his faith. He embraced Islam, which brought him peace, hope, and a renewed sense of purpose. Those who loved him saw him working hard toward the future he envisioned for himself, one filled with faith, compassion, and making his family proud. His determination, his resilience, and the love he carried for those closest to him reflected the goodness that had always been at the heart of who he was.
Though our hearts are broken beyond words, we find comfort in hoping that Brandon is once again with his beloved sister, Amanda. The thought of their reunion brings us peace as we hold them both close in our hearts.
Brandon is survived by his mother, Michelle Coffey; his sister, Melissa; and his brother, Andrew. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Amanda.
A private memorial service for immediate family will be held at a later date.
Brandon will be remembered for the kindness he gave, the lives he touched, and the love he shared so freely. His gentle heart, generous spirit, and unwavering compassion left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His kindness was his greatest gift, and it is that gift that will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
In lieu of flowers, Brandon's family encourages you to honor his memory by showing kindness to someone in need or by extending love and compassion to an animal in his name.
