Bruce Champney Johnson

Bruce C. Johnson died peacefully on September 22, 2026, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Bruce was born on June 6, 1943, in Washington, D.C., to John E. and Sylvia Johnson. His father, a chemist, worked as a scientist for several government agencies including the U.S. Navy and NASA, and Bruce grew up in Annandale, Virginia, with his younger sister Julie. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), where he met the love of his life, Joyce Samuels of Burlington, North Carolina. They were married on September 11, 1966, in Burlington. They were married for 37 years, and afterwards remained close friends and partners and took care of one another until the end of Bruce's life.

Bruce lived a life full of many journeys, experiences, and friends. After graduating from UNC, he obtained his PhD in Linguistics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. As part of his research for this degree, Bruce and Joyce lived for a year in Ghana in West Africa. After Northwestern, Bruce began his career as a professor teaching linguistics and language at several universities, including his alma mater, UNC; the University of California, Los Angeles; King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia; Shaw University; and the University of Northern Colorado. Bruce and Joyce raised two children, John C. Johnson (Chris) and Joshua S. Johnson (Josh), and several beloved dogs and cats. After retiring from teaching, for several years Bruce worked for the Transportation Security Administration in Denver, Colorado. In 2011, he returned to North Carolina to live out his retirement in a house near Chapel Hill.

Bruce appreciated the natural world and liked to spend time gardening, bird-watching, at the beach, and going for long walks in the woods ("swamp stomping"). He loved to travel, often visiting with family and friends, and traveled to many countries and literally around the world. He was an avid Carolina basketball fan for over 60 years. He had a big heart and was kind to people and to animals. Bruce was a deeply thoughtful and caring person who will be greatly missed.

Bruce is survived by his partner Joyce; his sons Chris and Josh; his daughters-in-law Joy and Jen; his grandchildren Jacob, Joseph, Jonathan, Alex, and Sammy; his sister Julie and brother-in-law Keith; and his nephews Matthew, Daniel, and Michael.

A celebration of life is being planned. Details will follow.
