June 9, 1942 — August 11, 2025

Durham

Clement J. Moses of Durham, NC, was 83 when he passed away on Monday, August 11th from complications of cancer.

Moses was Emeritus Professor of Physics at Utica College. He was born on June 9th, 1942 and brought up in Utica, New York, by his parents John G. Moses and Mabel K. Moses. He grew up with his elder brother Gerard E. Moses.

Dr. Moses earned an A.B. from Hamilton College, an M.S. from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. from State University of New York at Binghamton. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and won a Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship. He had over 30 years of science writing and teaching experience at the college level, and was a co-author of College Physics, 6th edition, with Serway and Faughn and a co-author of Modern Physics, 3rd edition with Serway and Moyer. In 1992 he had a sabbatical at the University of Genoa in Genoa, Italy. His research work, both in industrial and university settings, dealt with defects in solids, solar cells, and the dynamics of atoms at surfaces.

In addition to science writing, Dr. Moses enjoyed reading novels, gardening, cycling, cooking, singing, and going to operas. Over the course of his adult life, Moses adopted four cats: a black cat named Bernard, a calico cat named Pepe, an orange tabby named Annie, and a Tonkinese cat named Lady Teazle (aka The Teasler).

Moses is survived by his son Christopher J. Moses of Chapel Hill, NC and partner Suzon O. Kister of Durham, NC.

Clem, Sue, and Chris spent nearly 40 fantastic summers vacationing on the St. Lawrence River in a small cottage in the community of Thousand Island Park, Wellesley Island, NY.

Chris and Sue extend grateful thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Croasdaile Village Pavilion for their generous and devoted care to Dr. Moses.
