It is with deep sadness that the family of Derek Schmittel announces his untimely death on January 3, 2025 at the age of 42.
Derek was a joyful man who enriched the lives of all who knew him. He had a robust, jolly laugh. He loved animals and enjoyed watching the antics of the squirrels, birds, his dog and cats. He loved hockey and remained loyal to the Pittsburgh Penguins even after his move to North Carolina. He loved video games and Pokemon, and did some incredible impersonations. He was an avid media consumer and always knew the latest shows to watch. He enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons, Jack Box nights with family and friends, and the occasional round of golf. In recent years he gained skill as an axe thrower and participated in a league.
Derek had a caring soul and would have given the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He frequently gave money and food to the homeless along his walk to work on the Roberto Clemente Bridge, and continued that routine in Durham. He was hard working, many times maintaining two jobs to support his family and their dreams. Derek made family out of his coworkers everywhere he was employed. He worked at Highmark for 23 years and made many dear friends there. In recent years he also worked at Boxcar Arcade where he gained many new friends and was joyfully part of the team.
Above all Derek had unconditional love for his family. He was a constant presence who gave incredible hugs and a listening ear. He was endlessly supportive of his family’s goals and hobbies. He would drop anything to help. He was the master of technology, the squisher of bugs, and the one to clean up the gross messes. He adored Claire’s positive loving spirit, Miles’ generosity and sense of humor, and Aster’s intelligence and determination. He was incredibly proud of his children and wife.
Derek is survived by mother Linda (Gassert) Schmittel, his wife Lydia (Crawford) Schmittel, his three children Emma “Aster” Schmittel, Miles Schmittel, and Claire Schmittel, by his sister in law Misty Crawford, nephew Xaiver Zvara, and nieces Journey Zvara and Maisey Zvara. Derek was preceded in death by his father William Schmittel.
