Douglas Allen Miller

November 18, 1988 — February 16, 2025

Douglas “Doug” Allen Miller, age 36, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife, parents, and mother-in-law, in Apex, NC, on Sunday, February 16, 2025. He faced his aggressive cancer diagnosis with incredible strength and positivity. Doug was born on November 18, 1988, in Indianapolis, IN, and raised in Greenfield, IN. During his early years, he played baseball and basketball, learned to play the saxophone, enjoyed skateboarding, and played video games. In high school, he was active on the swim team, taught swimming lessons, and worked as a lifeguard. He also shared a love of cars with his dad — together they purchased a 1972 Pontiac LeMans, which they enjoyed restoring. Doug attended Ball State University in 2006 for two years, then started working at Ninestar Connect for three years. He later became a Test Engineer at a software company in Indianapolis. Over the years, Doug held numerous roles as a Software Engineer, focusing on front-end development and crafting design systems. In his most recent position, Doug was recognized as a top engineer known for his high standards, pragmatic thinking, creativity, sincerity, and dedication to mentoring others.

Doug met the love of his life, Sara, in 2012, and in 2014 they married in Indianapolis, IN. From the very beginning, their connection was undeniable. As a husband, Doug was devoted, supportive, and always attentive — a true partner in every sense of the word. They moved to North Carolina in 2016 and welcomed their daughter, Reagan, in 2023. Doug embraced fatherhood with his whole heart. He was endlessly patient, playful, and fully present. Doug was an active outdoorsman and, every year, went on multiple snowboarding trips to Snowshoe, West Virginia, with his nephew, Perry, and traveled out west with his friends to Lake Tahoe, Grand Tetons, Schweitzer Mountain, Mammoth Mountain, and Park City.

Doug loved planning trips, hiking at local and national parks, camping, swimming, and participating in the Master’s swim club in Cary, NC. He also enjoyed concerts, cheering on the Carolina Hurricanes at hockey games, skateboarding, competing in triathlons, and tackling house projects. Doug loved a good tenderloin, pizza, and anything cinnamon. Doug was a person whose warmth, kindness, love for his family and friends, humble attitude, strong work ethic, and quiet strength left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Whether through his generous heart, sense of humor, love of nature, or steady determination, Doug made a difference in both big and small ways. He had a gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued. Doug was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend.

Doug is survived by his wife, Sara Miller; daughter, Reagan Miller; parents, Duane and Cindy Miller, sister Stacy Miller; grandmother, Deloris “Dee” Miller; parents-in-law, Cindy (Ted) Meyer and John (Teresa) Ayres, sister-in-law Marci (Jerred) Copeland, niece June and nephew Perry Copeland, sister-in-law Mary (Mike) Fiedler, niece Elin and nephew Wil Fiedler, sister-in-law Ellen (Joe) Hynes, niece Gemma, nephews Henry and Malcolm Hynes, and brother-in-law Robby (Aimee) Horn, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Doug was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard and Dolores Cox, grandfather, Don Miller, aunt, Deborah “Debbie” Miller, and grandmother, Joan Gilkey.
