Dr. Merrill "Peter" Kaufman passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, in Durham, North Carolina under the loving and compassionate care of the staff at Carolina Reserve and Transitions Hospice. Peter was 89 years old.
Peter lived a vibrant and fulfilling life that touched the hearts of many. He was born on February 26, 1937, in Newark, New York. He graduated from Newark High School in 1954. Peter received his DDS degree from the University of Buffalo Dental School, following which he joined the Navy to share his skills in service of his country. After leaving the service, through a combination of training and experience, he was certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons as an oral maxillofacial surgeon. He built both a family and a successful career in oral surgery in Ithaca, New York, then retired to Durham, North Carolina in 2000.
Peter’s zest for life was evident in everything he did. Known as a man of boundless energy and enthusiasm, friends affectionately called him “the Energizer Bunny” and “Hunkystuff.” He embraced every opportunity to explore and enjoy life’s adventures. His hobbies took him to the edge of the skies as an accomplished pilot who held instrument, multi-engine and commercial ratings; and to the depths of the ocean as a skilled scuba diver. He spent countless hours in his beloved Mooney 201 flying his friends and family members all over the country!
When on land, Peter could often be found riding motorcycles or teaching others as an instructor for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and for Harley Davidson. His love for boating brought him joy on the water, while his talents playing the guitar, harp, and tuba brought music into the lives of those around him. A spirited swing dancer, Peter’s love for rhythm and movement was infectious.
Peter always made time for simple pleasures. He had a surprising fondness for soap operas, and could always be convinced to stop for a scoop of butter pecan ice cream. Peter adored his dogs and enjoyed walking with them on various trails in the area. He also enjoyed camping with friends in nearby parks.
Truly a Renaissance man, Peter could fix anything, and he passed that problem-solving, can-do attitude to everyone who knew him. He derived his greatest joy from the act of helping others, whether it was helping family, a friend, or teaching someone he just met how to ride a motorcycle or dance. Known for his generosity, kindness, and laughter, Peter had a way of making everyone feel welcome and valued.
Peter is survived by a loving family who will cherish his memory forever. He leaves behind his wife of 24 years, Kathe Collins Kaufman, his brother James J. Kaufman and sister-in-law Patty; his sister, Laurel Kaufman Matthes and his brother-in-law, Bill; his children, Merrill Peter Kaufman (Betsy), Kelly Valdez (Eduardo "Lalo"), and their families; grandchildren Peter Ivon Kaufman (Alexis), Jacob Daniel Kaufman (Allison), Lillian Valdez (Chris Lipata), Maxwell Davis Kaufman, Sarah Katherine Kaufman; great-grandchildren Theodore Ivon Kaufman, Brooks Michael Kaufman, and Eleanore Betsy Kaufman; as well as nieces Andrea Matthes (David Bethea), Kristine Lewis (Owen) and nephews Ryan Matthes (Corinne), Trevor Matthes (Melissa) and Jeffrey Kaufman (Marcie).
He was predeceased by his parents Ann Quick Kaufman and Dr. Joseph Julius Kaufman, and his former wife, Ellen Stotz.
Peter’s legacy is one of joy, adventure, love for life, and an enduring spirit that inspired all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn him today while celebrating the remarkable life he lived.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Durham, North Carolina. Per his wishes, his ashes will be spread in Ithaca, New York. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SPCA of Wake County, 200 Petfinder Lane, Raleigh, NC 27603 or online at spcawake.org.
