Eileen Ann Dowling

June 5, 1934 — April 2, 2026

Chapel Hill, NC

Eileen Dowling passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026 in Chapel Hill, NC.

Eileen, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and faithful servant of her church and community, was born in 1934 in Glendale, Queens, New York. She was the only child of John and Helen Grange and grew up in a proud Irish/German family that had a tradition of public service. Her grandfather, father, and two uncles all served as New York City Police Officers and it probably was not a surprise that she married Bob Dowling, a young, handsome Irish police officer in 1953.

They had a 58-year partnership that started with their first home in Plainview, Long Island. There they raised five boys and had a life full of ballparks, swimming pools, and barbeques. Eileen was the home project manager and always made sure that they had everything they needed. It was a life centered on family, discipline and faith.

A devout Catholic, Eileen found deep meaning in her faith and found strength from scripture and the sacraments. Throughout her years, she has been a regular volunteer in parish life and in her later years served as Extraordinary Minister, a role that she cherished.

After her sons left home, Eileen fulfilled a lifelong dream of working in the medical field. She earned her certification as a Medical Assistant and worked in a medical office for over 10 years. In 1992, she and Bob retired to Florida, fully embracing the next chapter in their lives.

Eileen and Bob purchased a home in Leesburg, FL and thrived in the community of Northern snowbirds. They were known for their vibrant social life and loved hosting gatherings. They also became active members of their community, serving on the association board and thoroughly enjoying their retirement years.

In 2019, seven years after Bob’s passing, Eileen moved to Durham, North Carolina. She lived in a senior living facility close to her oldest son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Bethaney. She again found new friends and enjoyed many visits from her other sons and their families.

Eileen is survived by her five sons: Robert, Daniel, James, Kevin and Matthew ; her five daughters‑in‑law Bethaney, Lori, Sue, Maggie and Michelle: and her six beloved grandchildren, Emmet, Cameron, Liam, Sarah, Rileigh, and Brian, who brought her immense pride and joy.
