Evan Hansen

It is with heavy hearts and deep love that we remember Evan Hansen, who passed away suddenly and tragically on April 29, 2025. Evan was more than just a student—he was a bright thread woven into the very fabric of our community. He was a beacon of unwavering friendship and kindness and has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.

Evan was born in Greenbrae, CA and is lovingly remembered by his family: his mother, Michelle Shariat-Hansen; his father, John Hansen; and his sister, Sierra Hansen. He is also cherished by his grandparents, Flora Esfahani and Fereydoun Shariat, along with his many cousins, aunts, friends, teachers, teammates, and mentors at Woods Charter School.

Evan brought warmth, laughter, and a sense of belonging wherever he went. He was a proud member of the Woods Soccer team and a co-founder of the school’s pickleball club—an idea that only Evan and his friends could turn into a hit. His teachers and classmates knew him as someone who worked hard and always found time to add humor while supporting others. Whether in class or on campus, he made people feel seen, heard, and appreciated.

His spirit of service reached far beyond school walls. Evan worked at Capps Pizzeria for two years, and each summer—since middle school—he gave his time as a camp counselor, bringing joy, guidance, and boundless energy to every child he mentored. He also volunteered with Rise Against Hunger, always stepping up to help wherever he could.

Evan’s passions made him unforgettable. He was a car enthusiast & aficionado who could name the make, model, and engine specs of just about any sports car on the road. Evan also had a deep passion for cooking, especially when it came to his signature pesto sauce. Cooking wasn’t just a hobby; it was a ritual, filling his home with the comforting aroma of good food and memories. His talent in the kitchen was a reflection of his generous spirit—a way to share love. Before moving to North Carolina, Evan played lacrosse, embracing the sport with the same energy he brought to everything he enjoyed. He also loved trail running, ultimate frisbee, gaming on his PC, and maybe most of all—gummy candy, which he insisted was a vital part of any balanced diet. He was the kind of person who had the ability to make you laugh even on your worst day and would share his last piece of candy if he thought it would help.

What we’ll remember most about Evan is his radiant sense of humor, his generosity, and his unwavering loyalty. He was fiercely protective of his friends and always extended kindness to those who needed it most, even strangers. Evan showed us what it means to lead with heart. He gave freely, loved deeply and lived with joyful intensity.

In Evan’s memory, we reaffirm our commitment to kindness, inclusion, and connection. Evan believed in making people feel safe, loved, and understood—and we honor that by standing together against bullying, by lifting up those who are struggling, and by reminding every student that their life matters.

His compassion didn’t end with his life; as an organ donor, Evan gave many others the gift of hope and a second chance, a final and powerful reflection of the generosity and selflessness he carried with him every day. His legacy lives on—not just in our hearts, but in the lives he saved.

In a life that feels far too short, Evan left a mark that will never fade. We love and miss you, Evan. Thank you for everything you gave us.
