Gail Evans Tilton, 72, died from metastatic cancer at UNC Health Care SECU Hospice House on April 8, 2025.
Gail was born in Wilmington, DE. She graduated from John Dickinson High School and the University of Delaware. After college, she took the Federal Civil Service exam and moved to Texas, then Alabama, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. She retired with her husband in North Carolina.
After leaving the civil service, Gail spent her time volunteering at libraries and with the Boys and Girls Club, and taught computer literacy at Harford Community College. She was a member of the American Association of University Women and Capital Quilters. Her real passion was quilting. Gail was a remarkable quilter with a masterful eye for fabric and quilt design and a penchant for creating perfectly coordinating colorways. She displayed her work in many exhibitions and won several ribbons. Her other great passion was her rescued husky Drea. Gail could not walk by a dog without petting it.
Gail was the daughter of Robert and Marion Evans (deceased). She is survived by her husband Ellis E. Tilton, her brother John (Vicki) Evans, sister Jeanne (Austin) Maher, niece Jayme Evans, and nephews Scott Evans, Austin Maher, and William Maher.
A Celebration of Life for family is planned for a future date. Anyone wishing to honor Gail’s memory can make a donation to Second Chance Pet Adoption at secondchancenc.org/support-us/honor-memory/.
