Gerald Murray Green, Jr.

Gerald Murray Green, Jr., 80, died peacefully in the early morning hours of August 20, 2026 after a courageous battle with liver cancer.

Gerry was born August 22, 1945, in Gainesville, FL to the late Gerald Murray Green, Sr. and Rachel Seay Green. He spent his childhood in Santa Monica, CA and Hartsdale, NY, where he loved baseball, boating, and scouring junkyards for parts to rebuild cars and boat engines. Gerry attended Syracuse University on a baseball scholarship before transferring to Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College) in St. Petersburg, FL. There, he met the love of his life (and future wife), Jane, taking her on many dates in “Bernice”, his red Dodge convertible. In addition to studying engineering and psychology, Gerry earned his Captain’s Papers and credentials to charter boats up and down the east coast and to the Caribbean.

Jane and Gerry were married June 27, 1970, in Abingdon, VA, and settled in Durham, NC to raise their two children. Gerry was a gifted administrator, leader, and mentor. He had a successful career in Healthcare Benefits as senior management at Blue Cross Blue Shield and other companies. Gerry’s professional achievements were only surpassed by the many personal connections he made over the years. His quick mind, friendly smile, and ready jokes brought joy to those around him, and he was most proud of making others feel included, loved, and cherished. He will be deeply missed and his spirit will remain forever with all who knew him.

Gerry is survived by his wife of 56 wonderful years, Jane Moore Green, daughter Rachel Green Baranski (Mike), son David Brevard Green, grandson Hartford Beckett Baranski, and two younger brothers, Todd Cory Green and Brant Kevin Green (Jane Bowe).

A service in Gerry’s honor will be held on September 12, at 2 p.m., at Few Interfaith Chapel at Croasdaile Retirement Village, 2600 Croasdaile Pkwy, Durham, NC. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Duke Hospice and the skilled care facility at Croasdaile for their exceptional care and kindness during Gerry’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Duke Hospice in memory of Gerry (Duke HomeCare and Hospice, 12 Moore Drive, Durham, NC 27713).
