James Royal Griffin Sr.

James Royal Griffin Sr., age 92, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, in North Carolina. Born on October 18, 1933, in Harlem, New York, he grew up in Peekskill and eventually started a family with his first wife, Jane. James built a loving home for his family in Clinton Corners, NY, where they embraced the beauty of country living.

James dedicated his career to construction, serving as an Operating Engineer and Master Mechanic as part of IUOE Local 137. His expertise contributed significantly to numerous construction projects throughout New York, including malls, roads, and bridges. He was indubitably considered a master of his craft, revered by colleagues and peers alike.

An avid outdoorsman, James had a passion for hunting and fishing that spanned decades. He often fished for trout in the serene setting of his own backyard, but he also relished opportunities for big deep-sea fishing, pursuing tuna, shark, salmon, flounder, cod, and many others. His hunting adventures took him far and wide, including Alaska and Canada, where he pursued big game like bear, elk, moose, and boar. A lover of nature, he shared some of these experiences with his trusty hunting dogs by his side.

James was a natural builder, capable of creating almost anything. Whether it was dog kennels for his beloved hunting dogs, a skating rink to entertain his children, or a pool enclosure for summer fun, he always found ways to meet needs and enhance the lives of those around him. His creativity extended to landscaping as well, providing beautiful additions to his family's outdoor space.

James was a proud veteran, having served in the U.S. Army as a member of the 85th Infantry, where he later served honorably in the capacity of an honor guard. His commitment to safety was evident not only through his military service but also in his role as a strong advocate for hunter safety. He shared his knowledge and passion with young hunters, teaching classes at West Point on hunter and gun safety, and guiding many young ones seeking hunting licenses through hunter safety courses.

James was a member and a deacon at various Baptist churches through the years including most recently Cool Springs Baptist Church in Sanford, NC.

James is survived by his first wife Jane Griffin, his current wife, Betty Griffin, and his children: daughters Vanessa Santiago (Abraham IV) of Poughkeepsie and Pearlene Derello (Wyoming) of North Carolina, along with his sons James R. Griffin Jr., James Kelly, and Raymond Kelly all residing in Indiana. He also has two loving Step-daughters; Kim Aaron (Texas) and Barbara McWhite (North Carolina). He had a tremendous amount of pride in his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues across New York, California, and North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret; father, James; his previous wives Viola Griffin and Dorothy Griffin; brothers Dr. William Griffin, Albert Thomas, and John Thomas; and sisters Mary Thomas and Alice Griffin.

James Royal Griffin Sr. will forever be remembered for his exceptional craftsmanship, his love for the outdoors, and the deep affection he had for his family and friends. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched and the joyful memories he created.
