Jane Marie Zickler Iversen died peacefully 8 March 2025 in Durham, North Carolina. She was 96. Jane was born 26 January 1929 to Harry and Anne Zickler (née Halbeisen) in Reading, Pennsylvania. She had two older siblings, Harry Jr and Elizabeth. Jane spent most of her long life in Miami, Florida, where she moved from Mt Penn, a suburb of Reading, in 1956 and where she married Dr Edwin S. Iversen (b 1922), Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Miami, in 1958. They spent 41 years of happy togetherness before Ed died in 1999.
Jane is survived by two sons and three grandchildren: Edwin S. Iversen, Jr (b 1965), who lives in Durham, NC with Merlise Clyde and their twin daughters Elise and Thea; and Eric J. Iversen (b 1968), who lives in Oslo, Norway, with Marit Moi and their son, Eiliv.
A homemaker, Jane led an active life both before and after Ed Sr passed away. At the University of Miami, she earned a BA, she participated in the continuing education program (OLLIE), and she was a longstanding and active member of the UM Women’s Club. She volunteered in a wide range of capacities through the years. For more than a decade, she acted as a guide at Vizcaya and at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, two historical locations in the Miami area. She also volunteered at the Coral Gables Museum and as an English teacher for refugees.
Jane enjoyed traveling. But her primary hobby was painting. She enjoyed art and was an accomplished painter, mainly of tropical landscapes. She finished her last painting in January 2025 in Durham, North Carolina, where she spent the final four years of her life in an assisted living environment. The move to North Carolina was her last. Now she embarks on her final trip, to somewhere over the rainbow.
