Obituary

Jason Neil Rudolph, 49, of Durham, North Carolina, died on May 21, 2026, after a courageous battle against cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer).

Jason was born on February 4, 1977 to James (Jim) and Sarah (Sally) Rudolph in Norfolk, Virginia. His maternal grandparents were Leland and Annette Holmes; his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Helen Rudolph.

Jason earned a computer science degree at the University of Virginia where he was also a member of the men's rowing team.

Jason was passionate about technology, travel, and fitness and pursued these interests throughout his life.

He worked for a number of startups, including Relevance and an early GitHub. He loved working with small teams of smart and driven developers and cherished the long-term friendships that grew from those with whom he worked. He nurtured and maintained those close relationships even across continents.

After leaving the corporate world, Jason founded his own company, Workshop 64, where he continued to build tools he believed were missing from the software space. He created a web app, BuildPulse, that quickly sold on the open market. He then turned his focus to creating a dive logging app, EveryDive, that he gifted to scuba divers around the globe.

Jason loved gadgets, ranging from his 3D printer to a simple laser level, and was always tinkering on various home-improvement projects with his suite of woodworking tools in his meticulously-organized wood shop.

On a typical day, Jason would spend the morning coding new developer tools or working on an iPhone app, then he'd switch gears and build the cabinets for our kitchen remodel in the afternoon. He loved working on his latest organization projects, whether it was staining a hand-built dining room sideboard, installing wainscoting in the bedroom, or crafting a custom dog den for Abby in the unused space under the stairs.

Anything Jason took on was done with the utmost precision, skill, and finesse.

When not completing projects at home, Jason could be found traveling the world: hiking PR1 in Madeira, chasing the northern lights in Iceland, traipsing up mountains in rural Vietnam, or rambling 50 miles through the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland, his wife always by his side. Together, they were regularly found exploring, whether on land seeing the "Big 5" on safari in Namibia or happening upon "a kangaroo with joey in a pouch!" in the Australian outback; or in the water diving off the shores of Bonaire, Dominica, Croatia, and the Azores. Every winter holiday was spent on an island in the Caribbean.

Jason vigilantly fought cancer with strength, grace, and bravery.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Michelle, and their dog, Abby; his mother, Sally Carver (Jimmy); brothers Leland and James Carver; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. He is predeceased by his father, Jim Rudolph; both sets of grandparents; and his favorite Dalmatian, Maggie.

In lieu of flowers Jason asks that his friends and family donate to the The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation: https://www.cholangiocarcinoma.org/donate/

A celebration of Jason's life will be held in the coming days.  Details will be posted on the Google doc.
