Joel Burton Schearer

Joel B. Schearer, 70, of Chapel Hill, NC passed away at home on Friday, September 25, 2026 following a lengthy illness.

Born in San Francisco, CA, Joel was the son of the late Joseph and Marjorie Schearer. After a few years his family moved to Louisville, KY, then relocated to Sarasota, FL for a brief time. They finally relocated to Warren, PA in 1963 where he later attended Warren High School. Following in his father's and brothers' footsteps, he enlisted in the US Army and later in the National Guard earning the rank of Staff-Sergeant (E-6).. He worked for a trucking company as well as a home building company, learning how to build and fix most anything.

After relocating to NC, Joel had his own home repair and renovations company. Most recently he was employed in maintenance and security at Carolina Meadows retirement community.He really enjoyed helping the residents there and working with his co-workers.

He enjoyed his Harley Davidson (although he wasn't able to ride it for several years), listening to music, going to the beach and watching "vintage" TV shows.He was a skilled woodworker and a perfectionist at his projects. Joel was a wonderful husband, father and friend and will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.

Joel is survived by his wife, Nora Neville Schearer; his son, Joseph Schearer of Durham, NC; his brothers, Lee Schearer (Monique) of Chapel Hill, NC, and Rolland Schearer (Rosemary) of Wisconsin; and beloved nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Connie Honhart.

To honor Joel, a celebration of life will be planned at a future date.
