John “Jay” Moore Wilson, III

September 22, 1974 — January 28, 2025

It is with immense sadness that the family announces the death of John (Jay) Wilson on January 28, 2025. He was taken prematurely from his family by the horrible disease of cancer. He fought valiantly until the very end. He was only 50 years old. The grief his family and friends are feeling is insurmountable. However, they will try to focus on how wonderful Jay was.

Jay grew up on the coast of North Carolina and always loved the beach. He eventually made his way to UNC, where he received both undergraduate and graduate degrees. He pursued teaching, which was his passion. Family was also everything to him.  Jay was an amazing father to his three wonderful children: Noah, Jacob, and Jenna. He adored them and wanted to spend all his time with them. They filled his heart, and he was infinitely proud of them. Jay shared his journey in life with his wife, Jennifer. They were married for 24 years and were truly partners in every sense of the word. Jay was also a devoted son who spent as much time with his mom, Molly Boone, and his stepdad, Larry, as he could. He was an amazing brother and uncle as well.  Everyone in the family could always count on Jay.

When Jay wasn’t with his family, he was teaching.  Jay taught for almost 30 years at East Chapel Hill High School. The impact he had on his students was well-known. Many current and former students reached out to him during his illness to let him know the influence he had on their lives. It truly humbled him. Jay was also a friend to all who knew him. He would always go out of his way to help anyone he could. Everyone who knew him loved him. They will all miss his laughter and loving heart. The world truly lost an angel.
