John Francis O’Donnell, a man of deep faith and integrity, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 29, 2026, a month shy of his 98th birthday. Born in Dorchester on April 29, 1928, to Dr. Roger and Helen (Flavin) O’Donnell, John grew up in Saint Brendan’s Parish. He was a proud graduate of the Boston Latin School, which he started attending in the 7th grade, and a "Double Eagle," earning degrees from Boston College (’50) and Boston College Law School (’53).
In 1962, John married the love of his life, Betsy Lewis of Arlington. Together they raised their family in Milton, where John practiced law for many years. He was a devoted and fun-loving father and husband who never missed a milestone. After retiring, John and Betsy split their time between Naples, Florida, and New England before settling in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 2020.
John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betsy; his children Helen Cella (Michael), Edward (Meg), Janet Green, and James (Amanda); as well as 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his close cousin James Regan and brother-in-law Jay Montgomery. He was predeceased by his parents; his stepmother, Madeline (Sullivan); his sister, Mary O’Meara (William); his brother, Roger (Betty); his dear cousin, Alice Daly (Paul); sister-in-law Janet Montgomery; brother and sister-in-law Warren and Margie Lewis; and his son-in-law, Ralph Green. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
