Joyce Thompson Funk

Joyce Thompson Funk age 82, passed away on October 7, 2026 at her sons’ (Lance & Mark) home in Chatham County surrounded by love, family and faith for a peaceful transition. After 37 years of sunsets on the Outer Banks, she walked home to heaven with the utmost care and attention. Born in Lynchburg, VA as a daughter of Alverta Jane Hill Thompson and Samuel Thornhill Thompson, and is survived by her sisters Martha Anne Coleman and Carole Mickle, the late Janet Schleicher, and her brothers Samuel Thompson and Wade Thompson and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She is survived by her husband Larry Oliver Funk, and her children Laura Ashby Underwood (Chad Garner) and Edwin Lance Underwood, Jr. (Mark Davis). She was a devoted and “Joyful” grandmother to her Grandsons Finneaus Garner and Asa Garner. Joyce strived to appreciate everyone she met and was a source of strength and encouragement to many. To honor Joyce’s life her family will host a celebration at a future date. She will always soar with the flight of the pelicans on the ocean breeze.
