May 13, 1939 — April 19, 2026

Chapel Hill, NC

Kelly George Weems, Jr, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on April 19, 2026. Kelly was born on May 13, 1939, in Biloxi, MS to Ella Mae and Kelly George, Sr. He grew up in Biloxi and attended Ole Miss, after which he enrolled in the Army and served as an officer for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. A committed family man, he was married to the love of his life Brenda for over 63 years, who followed him around the world with innumerable moves and was by his side at his last breath. Highlights of Kelly’s military career included teaching at West Point and a tour in Okinawa, Japan. After his retirement from the military, he worked as a professor of English literature at Chipola Jr. College in Marianna, FL where he was known for his creative impersonation of literary characters and performing as King Arthur in Camelot.

Kelly was a creative spirit whose passion throughout his life was building and decorating houses. He continued to rearrange furniture to the end. He loved sailing in the Mississippi Sound as a child and returned to it again later in life at their lake house in South Carolina. Kelly was known by all for his willpower but was equally loving and generous with a sense of humor that would bring tears to your eyes.

Kelly is survived by his wife Brenda, son Mark, daughter Desiree, and grandsons Sean and Declan. The family will hold a service at Christ Episcopal Church on Sunday, May 17th at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice (Authoracare of Burlington, NC) in his name.
