Lesleigh L.
Evans-Smith Cook
April 14, 1949 – April 14, 2026
Lesleigh L. Cook (née Evans-Smith), 77, previously of Wirtz, Virginia and Loudoun County, Virginia, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, her birthday. Born on April 14, 1949, in Burlington, Vermont, Lesleigh lived a life filled with love for animals, faith, and family.
Lesleigh pursued her passion for horses by earning an associate’s degree in Equine Studies from Southern Seminary Junior College. Her love for animals extended beyond academics into her professional life. For over two decades, she owned and operated a dog grooming and boarding business from her home in Wirtz, Virginia. Through her work, she touched the lives of countless pets and their owners with her care and dedication.
Her devotion to animals was not limited to her career. Lesleigh was deeply involved in dog training, excelling in obedience, fieldwork, and agility training. She also trained service dogs with St. Francis Service Dogs to assist those in need. Her commitment to rescuing dogs was evident through her involvement with GRREAT (Golden Retriever Rescue Education and Training), where she worked tirelessly to provide loving homes for rescued dogs. Horses also held a special place in her heart throughout her life.
Raised in the Presbyterian tradition and later a member of the United Methodist Church as an adult, she ultimately gave her life to Jesus Christ. Her faith guided her actions and brought comfort to those around her.
Lesleigh is survived by daughters Kimberly “Kimi” Mills (Wilhelm) and Kelley Cregan (Wilhelm); sons-in-law Jason Mills and Jim Cregan; grandchildren Luke Mills and Lauren Mills, who affectionately referred to her as Neenaw ; sister Wendolyn Tetlow; and one niece and three nephews. She was preceded in death by sister Bronwyn Schoelzel and parents Barbara Houchin Evans-Smith and William Evans-Smith.
Lesleigh’s legacy is one of compassion—for animals, for people, and for the world around her. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date to honor Lesleigh's remarkable life.
Please donate to your local animal rescue or shelter, in lieu of flowers. Thank you.
