Lucile Dennison Clotfelter, 79, died peacefully on October 3, 2026, after living with dementia for well over a decade. With her youngest sister at her side, she passed away in hospice care at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, NC.
Born February 13, 1947, the oldest of eight children, Lucile grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and maintained a Southern drawl and genuine smile that charmed everyone she met. She was naturally ambitious and equally diligent. After graduating with honors from Dykes High School, she studied classical piano at the University of Georgia and earned a master's degree in music. In her early thirties, she stepped away from the practice room, drawn by a yearning to work with people and to help them more directly. She earned her MD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and trained in psychiatry at Dorothea Dix Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident, and eventually built her own psychiatric practice in Chapel Hill.
After a divorce in 1995, Lucile set out to create a home of her own. She found an empty lot that inspired her and worked closely with an architect to design a house around her beloved piano, with great windows open to the surrounding nature. She delighted in the magic of birds, animals, natural light and seasons, all in concert before her. In time, she moved her medical practice there as well.
Her intelligence lived in movement as much as in thought. She played the piano with her entire being, earned a black belt in karate, practiced yoga and tai chi with devotion, and danced every social form she could find, from contra to tango.
Lucile cared deeply for people and the planet, supporting Doctors Without Borders and Habitat for Humanity. She kayaked, hiked, and was famous for her long walks. Beyond her many local river trips, she embarked on great adventures with the Sierra Club, including a multi-day whitewater rafting trip down the Colorado and a backpacking trek in Peru that culminated in a hike up to Machu Picchu. She also treasured adventures with her two sons, and planned memorable trips to New Orleans, Seattle, Phoenix, San Francisco, New York and London.
Perhaps most notably, Lucile lived her life, and faced her dementia, with deliberate positivity and joy, remaining grateful and humorous to the end. A common refrain we heard her sing was, "I'm in heaven…"
Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, Katharine and David Dennison, and her sisters Denise Fulford and Angel Candelori. She is survived by her sons, James Clotfelter and daughter-in-law, Kristin, and John Clotfelter and daughter-in-law, Emily, all of Durham, NC; her brother, David Dennison; her sisters, Cookie (Katharine) Daniel, Meri Pitts, Holly Kelly and Jeanie Cupp; and her grandchildren, Ayla, Ria and Caroline Clotfelter.
A musical celebration of life will be held in the spring in Durham, bringing together the people she loved around the music she loved most.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to honor Lucile’s legacy to Project Hope - Virginia, or the Environmental Defense Fund.
