It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael Steven Ross PhD on August 2, 2025 to pancreatic cancer.
Michael had a calming presence that touched everyone he met. For decades, he dedicated his life to psychology, where his gentle wisdom and compassion helped countless individuals find peace and healing. In the early 1970s, he built and led a large private practice in California and went on to hold numerous positions throughout his distinguished career.
Over the years, he oversaw an addiction rehabilitation center, served as a hospice psychologist, and spent the majority of his professional life in private practice in the Triangle area. His optimism, steady guidance, and humor enriched the lives of his patients—some of whom he counseled for over 30 years—as well as his family and friends.
Outside of his professional life, Michael found great joy on the golf course and watching his 3 dogs, Winna, Bella and Macy. Winna, in particular, enjoyed keeping his seat and pillow warm for him.
Not only was he a skilled golfing enthusiast, he loved the laughter and company of his golf buddies. The friendships he shared on the fairway brought him happiness throughout his life.
He was known for his quick wit, playful puns, wickedly funny Donald Duck impression, and his remarkable photographic memory. Beyond his professional achievements and his love of golf, Michael’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father to his daughters and stepchildren, and a loyal friend. His kind heart, easy laughter, and bright blue eyes will be remembered always.
Michael’s lifelong commitment to caring for the well-being of others were a hallmark of his professional calling and his personal character.
Michael leaves behind his beloved wife, Peggy; his daughters, Meredith and Erica; his stepchildren, Wendy and Laura; his grandchildren, Eleanor, Colette, Macy, Maya, Maddy, Ailey, and Liam; his brother, Irwin; his dear friend, Larry; and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever miss his humor, warmth, and unwavering kindness and optimism.
