Obituary

Naimeh Mukarkar Jernigan, born on November 7, 1928, in Beit Jala, Palestine, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was a beloved daughter, sister, mother, and dedicated professional, whose life was marked by her unwavering commitment to education and the empowerment of others.

Naimeh earned her Bachelor of Education from Jerusalem Girl’s College in 1952 before emigrating to the United States, where she pursued her passion for helping others. She attained a Bachelor of Social Work from Bluffton College in 1955 and furthered her studies in social work at the Hartford Seminary Foundation. Her career as a teacher in both private and public institutions and as a social worker for youth in need in New Jersey not only exemplified her dedication to education but also reflected her deep desire to make a difference in the lives of those around her. Naimeh found immense joy in promoting the development and empowerment of individuals, working tirelessly to uplift her neighbors.

A welcoming and loving woman, Naimeh was known for her bravery and self-determination. She had an uncanny ability to make those around her feel at ease and quickly formed friendships wherever she went. Her compassionate nature allowed her to recognize those in need and offer both support and friendship, creating a lasting impact on many lives.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Naimeh cherished time spent with family and friends. She loved having her loved ones close, forging deep connections and fostering a warm sense of community. Naimeh was also an avid reader and had a profound appreciation for nature, filling her life with beauty and knowledge.

Naimeh is survived by her two sons, John L. Jernigan (Jill Lukas), and Frederick A. Jernigan (Sharon Ellison), and grandson John B. Jernigan, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Sabah; her father, Salameh Mukarkar; and her siblings: Helen Mesleh, Sliman Mukarkar, Hanna Mukarkar, Sophie Mukarkar, and Miriam Eltarih.

As we remember Naimeh Mukarkar Jernigan, we celebrate a life devoted to service, love, and friendship, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
