Patricia “Pat” Barker

Marion Patricia (Pat) Barker (91), of Durham, NC, passed away on October 1, 2024.

She was born on March 2, 1933, in Newport, Rhode Island to John Charles Rackwitz and Marion Chase Rackwitz.

Pat graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, RI. She married Charles James Barker, Jr in 1952, in Newport, RI. They had 2 children (Charles James Barker, III and Diane Patricia Barker).

In early married life, they lived in several states and eventually settled in Durham, NC. When the children were older, Pat went back to work as a bookkeeper and insurance suspense analyst. She was grateful for the special group of people she worked with over the years.

Outside of work, Pat had a wide range of interests . In her younger years, she volunteered and served on boards in community and political organizations. She was an avid reader, loved history, quilting and crafts, gardening, and was an amazing cook. Pat dearly loved animals, and also loved being at the ocean and family beach trips.

Pat always made holidays, events, and day to day life special for her family. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family and beloved pets.

Pat is preceded in death by her father, John (Jack) Rackwitz, her mother, Marion C Rackwitz, her husband, Charles James Barker, Jr. and her son, Charles James Barker, III. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Diane B. Thomas, and all those whose lives she touched.
