Paul Michael Kauffmann passed away peacefully at his home of 42 years in Durham, North Carolina, on April 28, 2026, after a long illness. Born on November 8, 1948, in Huntington, WV, Paul spent most of his childhood in Aurora, CO and Dallas, TX. Paul graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a B.A. in Philosophy and later earned a Master's degree in Philosophy applied to Social Work from Bowling Green State University.
Paul dedicated the next two decades of his life to serving others as a Social Worker and Social Work Supervisor at the Durham County Department of Social Services. Helping others, especially young people, was his life’s purpose. After his retirement from DSS, Paul continued to inspire others by teaching Philosophy and Logic at Vance Granville Community College.
Outside of work, Paul enjoyed tackling DIY projects, golfing, boating, playing John Denver songs on the guitar, and escaping into the worlds of science fiction. The golf course and boat time on the water at the lake or sound (but, watch out for crab pots!) were among his happiest places, where he could relax, enjoy the outdoors, and most importantly, spend time with family and friends. He was a Star Trek fan who appreciated both its optimism and its logic...though those closest to him knew that even Captain Kirk might have struggled to win an argument with Paul when he was in one of his “grumpy but lovable” moods.
Family DIY projects were especially memorable, often (according to him) beginning with Lynn saying: “Well, all you gotta do is…” before turning into a multi-day adventure complete with debate, stubbornness, a new tool purchase and eventually a finished project to be proud of. His family will especially remember his light sense of humor, strong opinions, and the unmistakable way his gruff exterior always gave way to kindness, loyalty, and love.
Paul is survived by his beloved family: his wife of 47 years, Lynn Andrews; his children, Sabrena Kauffmann, Michael Kauffmann, and Kathryn “Katie” Kushner (Matt); and his grandsons, Christopher Haworth, Connor Kushner, and Logan Kushner. All of them feel deeply grateful to have shared their lives with him as a husband, father, and Grampa, and they will carry his love, wisdom, humor, and stubborn streak with them always.
Paul was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Kauffmann; his mother, Paula Hagen Kauffmann; and his siblings, Elizabeth “Betty” Aldridge, Irma Wentz, and Herbert Kauffmann.
During the last few years of Paul’s life, Lynn cared for him with extraordinary patience, kindness and love. She was by his side through it all - comforting him, advocating for him and loving him with the same steady commitment that defined their life together.
In remembering Paul, we honor a man whose life reflected compassion, education and service to others. His kindness was a beacon for all who had the privilege of knowing him. Paul’s generous spirit will remain a guiding light for his family, friends, and the countless individuals he dedicated his life to helping. His memory will remain a lasting source of comfort, laughter, and inspiration to his family, friends, students, and the many lives he touched.
