Richard Alpha Brice III

Dr. Richard Alpha Brice III, age 86, passed away peacefully. Born in 1939, Richard spent much of his life in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a place that reflected his deep commitment to learning, community, and family. Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Robin Brice; his daughter, Christy Brice; his son, Richard H. Brice; his daughter-in-law, Bettina Neset; and his cherished grandchildren, Xander Brice and Grace Brice.A lifelong educator, Richard devoted his professional career to serving as a Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of North Carolina. Teaching was not simply his profession—it was his calling. Over decades in the classroom, he shaped countless students’ lives through patience, integrity, and quiet mentorship. Richard was a gentle, thoughtful, and deliberate man, deeply devoted to his family. Outside of his academic life, he found joy in boating—especially wooden boats—saltwater fishing, and photography. He loved all the dogs he shared his life with, but none more than Boo, his constant and cherished companion. Those who knew Richard will remember him as a devoted family man, a lifelong teacher and mentor, and a man whose calm presence and steady character left a lasting impression. A memorial service will be held at Binkley Church, 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, on February 28 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard’s memory to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum.
