Steven Grant Seaton, a beloved member of his family and community, was born on November 5, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at home in Raleigh, NC, on June 28, 2025.
Steve was a gentle spirit, characterized by his kindness, warmth, and wisdom. He had a remarkable ability to hold space for everyone who crossed his path.
To Steve, there was nothing more important than the bonds he shared with family and friends. He thrived on togetherness; whether it was a large-scale family reunion, sharing a meal, a neighborhood social, or a simple chat with a friend, every moment spent in the company of loved ones fed his soul. He cherished the laughter of family get-togethers and the memories made during grandkid sleepovers.
Throughout his life, Steve was known for his unwavering composure and his ability to see the good in every situation. His love for reading and understanding the complexities of the world and people around him was unparalleled, enriching his conversations and deepening his connections.
Most importantly, Steven was a man of integrity. He embodied goodness in every sense and shared that goodness selflessly with those around him. He was a constant source of love and support. He had an unwavering belief in people, never giving up on anyone, but rather giving them love, acceptance, and support. His capacity to love was vast, and he was deeply loved in return.
Steve's love extended beyond his family and friends to his beloved dog Petey, with whom he shared a special bond. Their daily reflection time together was a cherished part of his life, as were the many walks through their neighborhood where they would chat with neighbors.
A passionate advocate for nature, Steven dedicated himself to protecting the planet. He found immense joy in hiking and exploring the natural beauty that the world has to offer. Together with his wife, Steve was always planning exciting new adventures, often seeking out hidden gems and experiencing different cultures through local cuisine and off-the-beaten-path travel.
His profound legacy will continue through his loved ones, including his devoted wife of 29 years, Lisa Seaton; his children, Jenelle Botts (Seth), Paul Seaton, Michael Pate (Mary), and Ashley Pate (Andy); brothers Greg Seaton and James Seaton; step-mother Iowa VanHamme; mother-in-law Linda Wilber; sisters-in-law Patti Seaton and Kirsta Cosgrove; brother-in-law Lynn Thompson; and his cherished grandchildren, Henry Botts, aged 12, and Madeline Botts, aged 9.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mark Seaton, and his mother, Marie Seaton, as well as his sister, Linda Thompson, and father-in-law, Robert Wilber.
As we reflect on the remarkable life of Steve Seaton, we celebrate the love, laughter, and kindness he imparted to us all. He will be profoundly missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched throughout his journey.
In lieu of flowers, Steve’s family is asking that you consider planting a tree in his honor. Each tree purchased in his memory will be planted in a North Carolina forest. When you visit the NC mountains or NC state parks, you will know you are among his trees.
