Susan Elizabeth Hoffman

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved mother, Susan Elizabeth Hoffman, who died on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at the age of 85.

Susan was born in Lansing, Michigan, and grew up in Marshall, Michigan. She attended Michigan State University, where she proudly was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. Throughout her life, she called several places home, including Hatboro, Pennsylvania, and Silver Spring, Maryland. In her later years, she lived in assisted living in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

Susan was a remarkably kind, beautiful, intelligent, and creative woman. She had a natural curiosity and many talents, which she expressed throughout her professional career. She worked as a teacher, legal assistant, and title examiner, demonstrating her intelligence, dedication, and attention to detail in all she did.

Above all, Susan treasured her family. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Robert George Hoffman, and a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. She knew how to make those around her feel cared for and loved. Her strength carried her family through many seasons of life, and her warmth, creativity, and unforgettable spirit enriched their lives simply by being part of them.

Susan leaves behind her husband, Robert George Hoffman; her sister, Mary Stealy Larsen, and her brother, Thomas Vinton Stealy; her children, Cornell Robert Hoffman and Elizabeth Susan Steinberg; her grandchildren, Ryan Tyler Steinberg, Zachary Hoffman, and Jacob Hoffman; along with other relatives and dear friends who will cherish her memory.

Though saying goodbye is incredibly difficult, her family is deeply grateful for the years they shared with her—the memories, laughter, lessons, creativity, and love she brought into their lives. Her influence will live on through her children, grandchildren, and the countless memories of a remarkable woman who meant so much to so many.

Susan was deeply loved, and she will be deeply missed.

A funeral service celebrating Susan’s life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Kensington, Maryland, on September 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. Family and friends are invited to gather as we remember, celebrate, and honor the life of a truly extraordinary woman.

May she rest in peace, surrounded by the same love she gave so generously throughout her life.

A Prayer for Susan

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Susan.Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light.

Grant comfort and strength to all who love her. May the memories we carry of Susan—the kindness she showed, the wisdom she shared, the beauty she brought into the world, and the love she gave her family—remain forever in our hearts.

May light perpetual shine upon her, and may she rest in peace.
