Obituary

Trevor Gray lived a life dedicated to helping those around him, because he believed that every person deserved to be shown the love of God. He was a loving husband, son, brother, and friend. His fun-loving spirit enabled him to bring joy through laughter when it was most needed. He could change the mood in a room with a single smile. He was sweet when sweetness was needed but quite serious when it came to determining what kind of person he wanted to be.

He never lost his child-like zeal for life, and his many passions included cars, card games, board games, movies, pizza and legos. He loved his family’s Toyota 4Runner, “Cletus”, an old soul of nearly 300,000 miles, which Trevor came home in as a baby and refused dearly to part ways with. He became a “car guy” and enjoyed straightening the curves of 221 in his Nissan Z and traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway, documenting each overlook along the way.

Trevor was born to two incredibly loving parents, Brett and Sarah Gray. Through example, his mom and dad shaped his character, as they taught him to earn the trust of others, show respect, and give 110% at every opportunity. A “miracle baby,” his competitive spirit defied the odds when his beautiful light shone in the world for the first time on November 20, 2001. His grandfather Jerry introduced him to the outdoors, and Trevor adopted his love of hiking on their Appalachian trail adventures.

From Trev’s childhood, his natural bent was to serve others. In fifth grade, he was chosen as the first recipient of an award in honor of Frank Senior, who gave his life to protect the students at Trevor’s school. Throughout his youth, he stood up for fellow students that were being bullied, creating a safe space. Service, informed and guided by his faith, became his driving force. With intent, he gave his attention to homeless individuals at stoplights, his friends, coworkers, and the waiters at his favorite restaurants. He firmly believed that every human deserved to be treated with dignity and loved without judgment.

Trevor was dedicated to learning, although it didn’t always come easy to him. In high school, he attended Langtree Charter Academy and Liberty Prep, where he made the varsity soccer team. Nimble and athletic, Trevor was an excellent midfielder, supporting his team with his keen perception and humble spirit. He was homecoming king his senior year. Trevor studied business at App State for three semesters before working for Mercedes-Benz of Durham. He wanted to be the best technician he could be, striving to learn as much as possible every day. He quickly earned himself his own bay at the dealership. His coworkers recall his presence as a “ray of sunshine” amidst the difficult daily grind, and he put the needs of his customers above his own. Working with dedication and meticulous attention to detail, he was motivated to ensure everyone had a safe and reliable way of transportation, as well as to provide for himself and his cherished wife.

Throughout his life and especially in the past few years, Trevor took great delight in Jesus’ love for him. Trev pursued spiritual growth with a tenacity that both acknowledged his own brokenness and accepted that Jesus made him whole. In pursuing his wife, Liz, he submitted their relationship to Christ’s leading, and he sought to always put Jesus first, asking God to lead their path. God blessed this desire of Trevor’s; and the two became engaged on a beautiful sunrise hike in the mountains. Trevor often shared with others how God taught him to release and submit his desires for marriage to the Lord, and he believed that Liz was God’s beautiful blessing in answer to this prayer. Liz and Trevor considered their partnership to be their greatest blessing and a picture of God’s grace to them.

Trevor passed on to glory on October 24th, 2026. In keeping with his character, he was helping another human who needed assistance in a car accident. Like Jesus, he gave his life freely for another; he was “the man of God. . . complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17, ESV). Jesus welcomed him home that night, and in a brief moment we will join Trevor with the saints and angels at the wedding supper of the Lamb. And there will be no greater joy.

Trevor Harlan Gray is survived by his wife Liz, his parents Brett & Sarah, his brother TJ, and his beloved grandmothers, Suzette Griffin and Vivian Gray, and grandfather, Bill Gray.
