Mr. Vernon Russell Eten, 73, passed away peacefully at home in Burlington, North Carolina, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, after a courageous fight against his health problems.
Born on April 16, 1951, in Graham, North Carolina, Vernon was the son of Russell Ludwig Eten and Mary Elizabeth Eten. He graduated from Graham High School in 1969 before continuing his education at Alamance Community College, where he earned a degree in accounting. A lifelong learner, Vernon pursued numerous certifications and credentials throughout his career, always striving to grow and evolve professionally.
In 1971, Vernon joined the United States Navy, dedicating ten years of service as a Cryptologic Technician and achieving the rank of First Class Petty Officer. His time in the Navy allowed him to travel extensively, being stationed in Japan, Spain, and the Philippines—experiences that broadened his perspective and enriched his life.
Vernon was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 54 years, Janice Johnston Eten. Together they built a life filled with love and laughter. He was also a proud father to his daughter Jessica Furr and her husband Andrew, and an adoring grandfather to Logan and Luke. He cherished time spent with family and extended that love to many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A man of many passions, Vernon found joy in building computers, playing video games, and listening to good music. His playful nature and quick wit brought laughter to those around him. Outgoing and determined, he never met a stranger and had an uncanny ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He also loved playing golf and treasured memories of playing at renowned courses like Pebble Beach and Pinehurst with friends and family.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roger Dale Eten. Though he is no longer with us, his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched.
